From Old Iron to Innovation: A Snowmobiler's Evolution

April 15, 20251 min read

Growing up I got introduced to snowmobiles at an early age and was hooked from the first ride. We look at those sleds as vintage old iron today.

This machine opened the door to traverse across the snowy, winter landscape like never before

Excited Motorheads finally had the freedom to explore uncharted terrain during the cold winter months

Were they fast…not really

Could you go off trail…only if you dared, lol

But regardless, the thrill of being behind the bars banging down a trail or through some open hay field is what fueled so many people’s passion for the sport.

Over the last 40 years I have seen many, many changes

The motors got bigger and more powerful

The tracks got longer with taller paddles

The suspensions upgraded from leaf springs to fully adjustable coil over or air shocks

The tunnel, seat, hood and chassis continued to change and morph into something new and exciting all would look forward to each year

Bottom line, year after year the engineers had to meet the demands of the riders pushing the snowmobiles further into the backcountry and continue innovating the capabilities to match the changing riding style

As we turn the page to present times, it makes me wonder what possibly could be done to improve the capability of the snowmobiles we ride

Only time will tell, but looking back through the years I can almost guarantee that the snowmobiles we ride today will soon be looked at as vintage old iron too.
